Forest Residence
The project site is a true dream for any designer – a lush forest bisected by a gentle creek and the foothills of the Appalachians creating a natural valley into which to nestle a quiet retreat. Siting the house on the side of a hill at the rear of the property solves several potential issues at once – elevating the living space out of potential floodwaters in the valley, providing security and privacy off the main road, and lifting the dwelling into the tree canopy providing a spectacular view of the surrounding forest.
The footprint of the house takes advantage of the sloping topography in order to minimize site disturbance. First floor spaces, like the garage, are partially submerged into the hillside, allowing direct access from outside to inside without the use of stairs. The second floor living room and bedroom feature dramatic cantilevers out into the treetops.
